What is perlite?

Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that has been processed and expanded to form lightweight, porous particles. Formed when obsidian, a type of volcanic glass, is heated rapidly at high temperatures. This heating causes the water in the obsidian to evaporate, causing it to expand and create many tiny air-filled cavities.
